Notarial Services

The U.S. Embassy can provide notarial services for American citizens and for documents needed for legal purposes in the United States. The consular section does not perform authentications. If you have a document(s) you need notarized, please bring the original document(s) with you. It is your responsibility to ensure that the document is complete and appropriate for its intended purpose. The consular section does not have document samples. Please be sure to bring identification such as your original U.S. passport, driver’s license, or another photo ID to confirm your identity. A consular section employee cannot serve as a witness for a notarial service.

Required items at the time of notarization

  • The documents to be notarized
  • Identification such as passport, driver’s license, school ID, etc
  • Witnesses, if required
  • Fee USD 50 for each notarial

Note: All routine consular services at the U.S. Embassy Nouakchott, Mauritania will be provided by Appointment Only to all U.S. citizens visiting or residing in Mauritania.. Emergency cases (such as medical emergencies, deaths or arrests involving American citizens) will still be handled on a walk-in basis during normal Embassy hours, or after hours by calling the Embassy duty officer.

The consular section does not notarize birth, marriage or death certificates. If you need an original birth, marriage, or death certificate from the U.S., please contact the appropriate authorities in the U.S. where the original document was issued.

Please visit ACS Fee for current notarial service rates. Notarial services are performed free of charge only if the document is needed for a consular service (e.g. a U.S. passport application, an immigrant visa petition, or a social security application) or for voting in a U.S. election.
