The U.S. Embassy informs U.S. citizens of two planned protests today, possibly lasting throughout the day in Nouakchott. The protests are expected to take place around the Ministry of Justice and the Azalai Hotel, on Abdel Nasser Avenue. Police are present and are currently using tear gas to disperse the crowds. Avoid this area for the majority of the day.
Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
