As friends of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and its people, the United States will follow the 2019 presidential election closely. This election is a milestone in Mauritania’s democratic development. The United States government is committed to work closely with the country’s next president and government, to continue building and strengthening the strong bilateral partnership between our two countries. Therefore, U.S. Ambassador to Mauritania Michael Dodman will meet with each of the six candidates over the next two weeks, in the order they filed their candidacy papers at the Constitutional Council, in order to discuss bilateral relations and to learn more about their priorities if elected President of Mauritania.
The United States does not support any particular candidate or party in the upcoming election. We support the democratic processes and values that the people of Mauritania and the United States hold dear. We welcome the Mauritanian government’s commitment to hold free, fair, participatory and credible elections that reflect the will of the Mauritanian people.
