Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan participated today in the tenth Ministerial Plenary meeting of the Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF) on the margins of the 74th UN General Assembly, in New York. The Deputy Secretary participated in sessions that endorsed GCTF framework documents, including two documents produced by U.S. co-led initiatives on interdicting terrorist travel and countering terrorist use of unmanned aerial systems.
Deputy Secretary Sullivan formally announced two new U.S.-led initiatives: one on pooling nations’ collective knowledge on developing watchlisting guidance of known and suspected terrorists; and the other on countering terrorist travel in the maritime domain. The Deputy Secretary additionally called on GCTF members to repatriate and prosecute foreign terrorist fighters captured in Syria. Deputy Secretary Sullivan thanked GCTF Co-Chairs, the Kingdom of Morocco, and the Kingdom of the Netherlands for their enduring commitment to the development and promotion of globally relevant civilian capacity-building tools.
