U.S. Department of State
Office of the Spokesperson
For Immediate Release
Statement by Secretary Pompeo
March 11, 2019
Today, President Trump requested $40 billion for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 Department of State and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) budget. This request upholds the President’s commitment to protect our country and put American interests first.
This budget focuses resources on protecting U.S. citizens, increasing American prosperity, and supporting our allies and partners. Built on the guiding principle that taxpayer dollars must be used wisely, this budget will maintain our commitment to produce successful outcomes, increase the effectiveness of programs, optimize humanitarian assistance, and advance partner countries’ self-reliance as they transition from U.S. assistance programs generously provided by the American people. It prioritizes protecting our diplomats and our borders, recruiting and developing our 21st Century workforce, and continuing to modernize our IT infrastructure.
With the resources requested in the President’s FY 2020 budget, and through the strategic, efficient use of taxpayer dollars, the State Department and USAID are well positioned to deliver results for the American people and continue America’s enduring mission as a force for good around the world.
