There are currently large numbers of demonstrators gathering in the vicinity of the old airport in Nouakchott. The number of protestors could eventually number in the thousands. The U.S. embassy advises U.S. citizens to avoid unnecessary movement and, in particular, avoid going to the old airport for the rest of the day.
Actions to Take:
Avoid the area around the old Nouakchott airport.
Monitor local media for updates.
Always be aware of your surroundings.
In traffic, always attempt to leave space in which to maneuver. Always leave yourself an exit and be prepared to take evasive action at any time.
Avoid choke points in travel and travel in groups, if possible.
Share your travel plans with family, co-workers, or friends.
