Event: The Mauritanian Ministry of Health has confirmed six cases of COVID-19 in Mauritania.

IMPORTANT: There is a charter flight schedule to depart from Nouakchott Airport on Friday, April 3, with a tentative 12:15 PM departure time.

Any U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident who would like to depart on this flight must contact the U.S. embassy immediately at consularnkc@state.gov or call the duty officer at 2662-8163, if you have not already done so. The cost of the flight will be $1,500 per person.  All passengers will need to sign a legally binding promissory to pay for the flight – there will be no cash or credit card payments accepted.

The flight will end in Washington D.C. at Dulles International Airport. Passengers who need to fly to other destinations inside the United States will make those arrangements with individual airlines and will be responsible for all costs associated with lodging and onward transportation. Each passenger will be allowed two checked-in bags not to exceed 23 kg and one carry-on that must find under their seat. The flight will not accept pets (including emotional support animals).  Exact departure, routing and cost are subject to change.

The Government of Mauritania is restricting internal travel for private citizens effective immediately.

A curfew is in place for Mauritania from 6 PM to 6 AM every day.

The U.S. embassy has changed its operating hours to comply with the new curfew. Our new hours are Monday to Thursday, 0800-1600 and Friday from 0800-1200.

The government of Mauritania has closed all land borders. The only exception is for commercial merchandise. Private U.S. citizens should not try to cross any land border at this time.

The government of Mauritania has implemented measures to limit the spread of COVID-19. Schools and universities are closed until 06 April 2020. Sporting events, festivals, and all gatherings have been banned.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 3 Warning for COVID-19 in Europe advising travelers to avoid non-essential travel to Europe.
